Colombia elects first leftist President in its history!
Gustavo Petro leads the quick count against Rodolfo Hernandez, but there's
Bogotá, Colombia- “It is a victory I have waited for my whole life!,” said Andrea Vargas through tears as she clutched a campaign sign from the streets outside the location of Gustavo Petro’s victory party.
“For years, I have watched the same violent group rule our country, and now….” she broke off. Weeping with joy as her friend hugged her. The streets were filled with honking motorists despite the rain. Some residents hung from windows shouting and banging pots.
Gustavo Petro won the “quick count” in todays presidential election. He and VP Francia Marquez led by 4% with 94% of the vote tallied— a lead of a million votes.
After a contentious and sometimes violent campaign, Colombia has elected the first leftist president in it’s history.
At the Bogotá convention centre where Petro and Márquez are holding their victory event, the vibe is ecstatic. This vid is from Dani:
