US claims about Latin America grow more alarmist by the day. Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua is destabilizing the continent through a reign of unprecedented terror. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is their leader, and is using them to invade the US mainland along with criminals released from ‘insane asylums’ hiding among migrants. “Narco terrorists” from Venezuela, Mexico, and Colombia are invading North America, ‘poisoning hundreds of thousands’ with fentanyl.
And as each statement ratchets up the tone of hysteria at the White House, the justifications for their actions become ever more vague. No evidence for any of these claims is presented to the public. We are expected to take politicians at their word: the same politicians who have made false claims for years.
Nonetheless, these assertions are being used to rationalize a massive expanse of executive power. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump brings his personal style of reward and retribution politics to Latin America: this time at the barrel of a gun.
